June 13-29                      Astoria Music Festival

In one short decade the Astoria Music Festival has become one of the most active summer musical events in the Northwest. There’s something for every taste and pocketbook this summer, from Verdi’s La Traviata, Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos, and the West Coast Premiere of the recently rediscovered sequel The Magic Flute, Part 2: Das Labyrinth to Symphonic Masterworks, free “Classics 4 Kids,” intimate Chamber Music and informal Happy Hours. It’s a feast for the senses.  Speaking of tastes, we hope you’ll take time to explore Astoria’s culinary riches, galleries, dramatic Columbia River setting, quaint shops and historic sites. Once you have, you’ll echo Lewis and Clark’s exclamation when they first saw this place, “Oh the Joy!”

June 21                       Cannon Beach Sand Castle Contest.

Cannon Beach, Oregon will celebrate the 50th annual Sandcastle Contest on Saturday, June 21, 2014. The event is one of the oldest sandcastle contests in Oregon and the most popular annual event in Cannon Beach. Dozens of teams participate in the contest with divisions for Masters, who compete for cash prizes; plus large group, small group and children’s divisions with winners receiving medals and ribbons.

Sandcastle building plots are laid out in the morning, a back hoe digs holes nearby to provide a water source. Masters teams typically utilize construction forms, similar to those used for pouring concrete. Sand is shoveled, tamped and packed into the forms to make large, elaborate sand sculpture creations possible without crumbling under their own weight. The creations are best viewed right before judging takes place and winners are announced. The temporary works of art are usually washed away with the next high tide.
